Financial Statement Services

Attest services

Audit, review and compilation services

Audit

A financial audit provides reasonable assurance that your organization's financial statements are free of material misstatement. It also assures that the financial statements are presented in conformity with professional accounting standards, or generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), i.e. those that have been established by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). We'd have to be independent of your organization to perform an audit.

This puts you in a better position to obtain additional capital, funding or loan financing.

An occasional audit may be a good way to ensure that your "fiscal house is in order" by having your fiscal practices reviewed by a competent professional, like a Certified Public Accountant. We can recommend improvements to your accounting system and operations after completing the audit.

Review

A review provides limited assurance that material changes aren't necessary to the organization's financial statements for them to be in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles. It's not as extensive as an audit, which involves observation, testing, and confirmation of accounting balances. The objective of the review is to determine whether the data presented in the statements makes sense. As with an audit, we'd have to be independent of your organization to perform a review.

A review would be worthwhile when you wish to improve the accuracy of your financial statements and tax returns, but don't need the higher level of assurance provided by an audit.

Other attest services

Agreed-upon procedures engagement

We would agree on specific procedures we'd perform on designated subject matter, and we'd issue a report of findings based on the procedures performed. We wouldn't be performing an examination or review. However, we'd need to be independent of your organization.

Specified elements of a financial statement
or financial statement accounts

This kind of engagement would be useful when, for example, a lessor requests a schedule of sales to substantiate the lease payment(s) due according to a percentage lease (base rent + a percentage of revenue earned). The lessor may specify that the schedule be audited, or at least reviewed or compiled by a CPA.

Other financial statement services

Compilation

A compilation offers no assurance that the financial statements are prepared in accordance with GAAP or any other basis of accounting.  We'd simply prepare financial statements that report your data in a format that complies with GAAP. We'd perform no analysis of your financial data unless we become aware that it's incorrect or incomplete.

We'd become familiar with the accounting principles and practices common to your industry, and obtain a general understanding of your transactions and how they're recorded.

We wouldn't need to be independent of your organization to be able to prepare your compiled financial statements.

To recap, of the above three levels of financial statement service, an audit offers the highest level of assurance, followed by a review, and then a compilation.

Personal financial statements

Having a personal financial statement prepared, one that includes your personal assets, liabilities and net worth, is useful when applying for a bank loan, applying for credit, doing tax planning or for gaining a better understanding of your financial situation. Such understanding usually results in your having more control over it.

Graphical presentation of financial statements
